There's a tone control for the Wet side that you can use to tame the brightness a bit, and that works pretty well at keeping the Reverb from being unbearably bright. But the sound of the low-clock settings is totally different from the original-not grimy and blurry but bright and edgy, and switching to "Classic" mode doesn't change that. Yes, you can turn down the clock without having constant background noise. That's not to say that the new features are bad, I just would have liked to known in advance that the pedal I bought for €470 would not in any way be able to replace my MkI because while it uses the same basic technical approach, the resulting output is very different.Ĭlick to expand.Yes and no, in my opinion.
I feel that should have communicated more clearly the fact that MkIi is not a version of MkI with additional features, but with different features. To me, MkII feels more like a basic granular looper that replays choppy segments in pretty much every mode, whereas MkI was much better at creating instant textures that felt much more organic and smooth and less like the looper output they actually are. The resulting sound feels chunky and much less elegant. MkIi Reverb couples slice length with the number of repeats, so it's no longer possible to create long, slightly wavering reverb trails as you have to reduce the size of the slices to get this effect, but in doing do, you also reduce the decay time. The Stretch mode should really have been renamed Chop mode as it chops the signal into tiny segments that re then looped, unlike the MkI, which creates a much smoother output that sounds much more like a stretched signal. While I generally dig the MkII, I am quite unhappy that the two modes I use most frequently have changed dramatically from MkI and can also not be recreated in Classic mode. I keep seeing this question, and as an owner of both, I see why they appear to similar, but I think they are VERY different pedals.ĮU order #2094 arrived a week ago, and I've been playing around with it some.
The last thing I'll say is I let my friend borrow my Microcosm months ago. I hate being the "both" person, but you can't go wrong with either. It really comes done to the users' needs. Both make happy accidents and are great desktop units. Also, the fact you can play it like an instrument should also be considered if you are into that. It's like Blooper and and Habit had a stereo baby. So many ways to loop in unconventional ways on both sides. If you want access to highly flexible wet effects on their own, MOODII is worth the price of admission alone. MOOD II can provide similar results, but in vastly different ways. You never know what the Microcosm will give you, but it is often gorgeous. It's somewhat more manageable and the presets don't feel so same-y. In my experience, the pedal works best with midi clock. The four reverbs on hand are gorgeous, but, unfortunately, they are all pre-effect, which smears each preset into a cloud of sound. If you are looking for a traditional reverb or delay, the Microcosm will not provide it.
The Microcosm is competitively priced at $459 with a traditional looper and 44 presets on board. As Joel just said, they're still getting preorders out the door as fast as possible.
Perhaps this is by design so CBA doesn't get overwhelmed. Unfortunately, there are hardly any deep dives on MOODII yet, which would inform curious buyers.
